Alignment of goals ensures cohesive direction, synergy, and collective focus towards shared objectives, fostering efficiency and driving organisational success
Mesh encourages users to align their goals, and the same is incorporated in multiple workflows to facilitate ease of use. At times, you may be allowed to only create goals that are aligned to a parent goal, based on the Goal Setting Methodology followed by your organization.
You can align your goal (objective or key result) to a parent goal via either of the following methods:
Alignment while creating a goal
While creating a goal or initiative, you would find the Parent goal alignment section in the card at the top of the screen.
By default, every goal is not aligned to a parent (unless it is a child goal), and thus, you would see "None" selected in the Parent goal alignment field.
Step 1: In the Parent goal alignment section, click on the box to choose the parent goal that wish to align your goal to. You will only be seeing goals that are defined in the pre-selected timeline. To change the timeline, click on Cancel, select a different timeline using the Timeline field and click on the Parent goal alignment section again.
Step 2: Choose the parent goal that this goal would align to.
Click on the Expand icon before a goal name to expand the child goals aligned to it, if you wish to align your goal to one of the child goals.
Step 3: Once you have finalised the goal to add as a parent, click on the radio button to select the goal, and click on the Realign option to align the selected goal as the parent goal.
Similarly, if you wish to remove the parent goal, you can click on the Remove Alignment option to remove it as the parent goal.
Note: Since a goal is aligned to a parent goal defined in a specific timeline, changing the Timeline of a goal changes the Parent goal alignment to "None". Depending on the goal setting methodology followed by your organization, you may be required to align a goal before saving it.
Re-alignment: Alignment while editing an already created goal
At times, you may wish to place a goal at the parent level in order to align it later or change the parent alignment for a goal that has been incorrectly aligned.
You can utilise the Details Panel for this purpose.
To edit the Alignment of a goal;
Step 1: Choose the goal that you would like to re-align. You can access different types of goals based on your requirements and depending on your access control to the workspace.
To re-align your personal goals, click on Me and click on Goals under the Portfolio section.
You would see your goals under the My Goals section.
Similarly, you can view your company-wide public goals under the Company-wide Goals section.
Step 2: On the Goals list view, select the goal (objective or key result) that you wish to edit. You can also utilise the Search option in case the goal is not visible upfront, and select the goal.
Step 4: Select Parent Goal Alignment from the side panel. Depending on the name set by your Admin for the Goals module, the text in the side navigation panel would be Parent <module name> Alignment.
Step 5: You will now be able to see a tree structure of all the goals that give you a birds-eye view of the hierarchy followed in your organisation. The exact position of your goal would be highlighted on the screen within the tree.
If you wish to re-align your goal, select the Re-align option.
Step 6: You will be led to the "Re-align Panel".
Select a parent goal from the list or expand a particular goal to view the child goals that are aligned to that goal, in case you wish to align your goal to one of the child goals. You can also search for a particular goal.
As discussed above, you will be seeing goals in the timeline that is defined in the top right corner of the "Re-align Panel" only.
Step 7: Select the goal you wish to select as a parent and click on the Re-Align button.
If the goal that you are re-aligning has no child goals, your goal would be re-aligned to the selected parent goal.
However, if the goal that you wish to re-align has child goals:
Step 8: You would be required to confirm if you wish to re-align the child goals as well.
If you choose to re-align the child goals as well, the goal would be re-aligned with all its child goals in the tree.
If you choose not to re-align the child goals
Step 9: You would have to choose a parent goal for the child goals of the goal that you wish to re-align. Doing so would re-align the child goals.
Step 10: After choosing a parent goal for the child goals, you would then be required to choose a parent goal for the goal that you wish to re-align, and your goals tree would be successfully updated.
Note: You can also access the re-align option from the Ellipsis menu towards the top right corner of the goal title.
It is also available towards the extreme right of the list view of goals.
